Starting School Advice

Starting primary school can be an exciting but daunting experience for your child and for you.

Your child will have had visits to their Primary school with their keyworker and friends and you will be invited along to induction days in June. This will be an opportunity for you to meet the staff at the school, get a tour of the building and find out all about the school experience for your child.

Your child’s teacher will meet with their keyworker and discuss their progress, they will also write a report for school which you will discuss at parents meetings.

The children will learn about school and what happens there in nursery, they will have opportunities to talk about the next phase and what they are excited/scared about. By having these discussions and transitions it is hoped that your child will have a smooth transition to primary.

To help prepare your child for a good start you can:

  • listen and talk to your child about this change in their lives
  • Develop their independence skills and encourage them to dress themselves
  • Help them to recognise what their name looks like
  • Develop their listening skills with games at home
  • involve your child in getting ready for school by helping choose the things they will need, for example their uniform, lunchbox, schoolbag
  • talk to your school if you have questions or concerns
  • support staff in getting to know your child, let them know about interests and health issues
  • keep in touch with the school about anything that may affect your child’s learning
  • find out how the school will communicate with you.
